Janitor

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will work independently, as well as, assist other maintenance personnel with all required tasks. Janitors/Janitresses will perform a variety of tasks in preparing vacant apartment units for painting as well as final preparation after painting is completed. They will be required to keep the office areas in clean and orderly condition. This position will be responsible for projecting a positive, professional attitude and demeanor at all times during such contacts. The incumbent must work effectively as part of a team, accept supervision respectfully and politely while promoting goodwill among both authority employees, residents and in the community at large in a style aligned with the objectives and values of the Rockford Housing Authority.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Sweeps, mops, scrubs, dusts and vacuums hallways, stairs and offices, empties waste baskets and cleans ashtrays and replenishes bathroom supplies of office areas.
2. Looks for and notifies supervisor concerning any need for repairs of units or offices being cleaned.
3. Wash walls and trim of vacant units in preparation of painting or spot clean if painting is not required.
4. Wash, scrub, strip, wax and buff floors, as needed. Shampoo carpets when required.
5. Move and clean stoves and refrigerators.
6. Clean cupboards, kitchens and bathrooms.
7. Clean and polish lighting fixtures and trim.
8. Wash all windows on inside and outside of all first floor windows. Wash other windows, as assigned.
9. Remove debris from vacant units when necessary.
10. Perform touch-up or final cleaning after completion of painting. 01/2017

11. Clean community buildings when required, including floors, bathrooms, emptying wastebaskets, removing debris.
12. Assist others in various office cleaning duties when assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION:

1. High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of one (1) year of successful related work experience in building and property cleaning (preferred).
2. May be required to lift heavy objects.
3. Must have basic knowledge of cleaning supplies and equipment. Equipment to include some hand tools as well as floor scrubbers, and carpet shampooers.
4. Must be able to prepare simple reports and record-keeping tasks.
5. Must be able to work independently and under varied amounts of supervision.
6. Must be able to work with a diverse public.
7. Must have basic knowledge of electronic devices to include but not limited to smartphones, iPads, laptops and desktops.
8. Must have basic knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
9. Must possess a valid Illinois driver's license, be insurable by RHA and able to provide personal transportation as needed to perform duties (reimbursement will be made per RHA Travel Policy). A copy of current driver's license and personal vehicle liability insurance (if operating a personal vehicle while on RHA business) must be on file in Human Resources.
